Mrs. Meyer’s 4th, 5th, and 6th grade social studies classes attended a virtual field trip on Friday. Ms. Byrd, Keytesville R-III agriculture teacher and FFA advisor, sent the information to the elementary teachers on behalf of the American Royal. Each month, the American Royal will upload a new virtual field trip for students to attend. The virtual field trip for September was to Hildebrand Farms, which is a dairy farm in Junction City, Kansas. After watching a video of how the cows are milked and how the milk is processed, the students watched another video on how to make butter. Once the video was finished, Mrs. Meyer gave the students the supplies to make butter. Each student received a container of heavy whipping cream and were told to shake it until the cream separated and made butter. The students realized that the fat molecules in the cream clumped together to form the butter from being agitated.
The student’s really enjoyed this activity and can’t wait to see what the virtual field trip for October is.
