After a full week of preparation, our 4th and 6th graders finally got to create their very own Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons today! Throughout the week, students learned all about the parade’s history, including that it started in 1924 with live animals from the Central Park Zoo. They also discovered how Tony Sarg, a German-American illustrator, designer, and puppeteer, came up with the idea for the iconic character balloons we see today.Students then put their science skills to the test by using the design process to plan, sketch, and bring their balloon creations to life. Today was the big moment, and they were so excited to turn all their hard work and creativity into amazing balloon designs! This hands-on project was the perfect mix of history, science, and fun! ... Our 6th graders have been diving into the world of the earliest humans in social studies, learning all about prehistoric people and the Paleolithic Age. One of their favorite lessons was exploring cave paintings, which were some of the first forms of human expression.Students discovered that early humans painted on cave walls using charcoal, berries, and minerals mixed with water, animal fats, and oils, and they painted with sticks, feathers, and even their hands. To really experience what that might have been like, Mrs. Meyer turned the classroom into a cave! She handed out crumpled brown paper to mimic cave walls, turned off the lights, pulled the blinds, and gave each student a flashlight to represent a fire. Using only their fingers, the students created their own cave art masterpieces, just like early humans would have done! They even used real prehistoric symbols and had to interpret what each might have meant. The room was full of creativity, curiosity, and laughter as students learned what life was like thousands of years ago! ... See MoreSee Less
